What to Do After a Car Accident

Auto accidents are sudden, unexpected and stressful. If you are in an accident, Merced Property & Casualty Company (MPCC) is committed to helping restore your peace of mind as soon as possible. If you have recently been involved in an accident the following helpful hints will get you through this difficult time.

Immediately After an Accident

  • Stay calm and composed.
  • Check for injuries; call Emergency Medical Services if necessary.
  • If the accident is minor, move cars to a safe place, out of traffic.
  • Turn on your vehicle's hazard lights and use cones, warning triangles or flares if available for safety.
  • Call the police, even if the accident is minor.
  • Notify your insurance agent or Merced Property & Casualty Company immediately.

Other Important Tips

  • Do not sign any document unless it's for the police, your insurance agent or MPCC.
  • Take written notes about the accident, including specific damages to all vehicles involved, driver information, witness information, etc.
  • If you have a camera available take photos of the vehicle(s) and scene. If available and allowed by the other party photograph their driver’s license and vehicle registration
  • If the name on an auto registration is different than the driver record the relationship.
  • Be courteous. Don't tell anyone the accident was your fault, even if you think it was.
  • State only the facts, and limit your discussion of the accident to the police, your insurance agent and MPCC.
  • Don't leave the accident scene before the police and other drivers do if at all possible.
